The 19th Police Precinct's Community Council celebrated its 40th anniversary on the Upper East Side.
The council gathered earlier this month at the Church of the Holy Trinity, with live music, lots of food, and many of the precinct's former officers, who came to reminisce and celebrate.
Kathy Jolowicz, a vice president and founding member of the council, provided archive photos and a detailed history.
The council was formed in 1973, when residents came together in response to a methadone clinic run by a lumber company on the northwest corner of 84th St. and Third Ave. The clinic, and a growing gang problem, menaced the neighborhood.
Today, the council continues to meet the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the precinct station house at E. 67th Street.
