The death of an 84 year-old UWS resident last July was reclassified as a homicide on Jan. 15, according to the NYPD.

Police told The Spirit that officers found Asa Asencio unresponsive after responding to a 911 call at 70 W. 93 Street on July 7, 2023. It was around 10 p.m. EMS arrived and pronounced her dead on the scene.

The Daily News additionally reported that police had determined that Asencio was a victim of elder abuse, and that she exhibited trauma and bruising around her neck and head areas.

A neighbor of Asencio’s that spoke to the News, Migdalia Rodriguez, said that she would “knock on [Ascencio’s] every once in a while to see if she was OK.” She added that her neighbor “didn’t deserve this.”

Asencio, a retired public schoolteacher who reportedly suffered from dementia, lived with her son in the apartment. According to Rodriguez, the place was “always a mess” when she stopped by. It is unclear if she had a home health aide. Police have yet to release the name of a suspect, and no arrests have been made as of press time.
