Police Arrest Suspect in Death of Beloved Bouncer at Local Pub

A 34 year old man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in the death of beloved Chelsea bouncer, Duane “D train” Patterson, who was sucker punched as he tried to dispel an unruly wanna be late night patron from Billy Mark’s West pub on Christmas Eve.

Earl Gumbs of 523 W. 152nd St. was arrested and charged with manslaughter and assault in the death of Patterson, who died four days after the assault that caused his head to slam against the pavement and sent him into a coma. Police said the suspect hit Patterson with a closed fist to the face causing him to fall backwards and hit his head. A bartender called 911 as the suspect fled but Patterson never regained consciousness.

Patterson, 61, was an Air Force veteran and was listed as an organ donor. The family kept him alive for several days after they learned on Christmas Day that his brain activity had ceased. He made one last gift before he died on Dec. 27, donating his kidney to an ailing younger sister.

A Go Fund Me Page started by his daughter Arianna Buchholz raised $26,490 as of January 13.

“On the early morning of Saturday, December 24th Duane Patterson, father, husband, and wonderful friend was terribly assaulted while outside on duty,” she wrote.

“To everyone who has donated or sent a message, thank you,” she said. “It is hard to articulate how deeply appreciated and moving this support has been. We are currently finalizing plans for memorial services and will update friends and family when able.”
