Taxi Strikes Biker On West Side Highway
In dramatic dash-cam footage shared online, a taxi could be seen rolling a biker over their hood at around the W. 39th St. stretch of the highway. The incident seems to match a police report, in the same vicinity, that has a driver leaving the scene of an accident.
A taxi struck a biker on the West Side Highway on July 26, fairly dramatic dash-cam footage posted online shows.
Police told Chelsea News that an incident was reported at the W. 39th St. stretch of the highway that same day, with an “unknown vehicle” striking a biker shortly after 3 p.m. The report noted that the biker, a 28 year-old man, was uninjured. The driver then “left the scene of the accident,” cops say.
The footage–which was shared on the r/nyc Reddit–showed the taxi turning onto the 12th Ave. stretch of the highway, near around either W. 38th St. or W. 39th St., when it crossed a bike lane and plowed into the cyclist at a modest speed. Fortunately, the cyclist flipped over the hood before clattering back onto the road, with the video cutting out shortly thereafter.
Various Redditors speculated as to why the crash may have happened. “There’s probably a big stretch of no vehicle crossings before this intersection that lulled the biker into the belief that it was all clear to zone out for a minute,” user “sonofdang” wrote. “Never relax while on the road–bikes, cars, pedestrians–this applies to everyone.”
Others had questions about the traffic light system, split between bikers and cars, and how it possibly could have led to the accident. “The southbound red traffic light probably indicates the Taxi has the green light to cross the highway,” wrote user “diggydar.” “There’s a bike red light there but it’s not conspicuous enough imo [in my opinion].”
”That’s the Hudson River Greenway divided bike path that I’ve ridden many times and bikers have their own traffic lights that do not always coincide with the lights on the Westside Highway,” user “word fool” wrote. “By the looks of how many bikers and tourists were cycling through the junction without pause I suspect those might have [been] green.”
