Teen in Custody After Two Shootings in Times Square, 8th Ave

Hours after the end of the Knicks Championship Parade downtown, police took a teen into custody for shots fired in Times Square and a subsequent shooting-slashing nearby on 8th Ave.

Crowds were seen fleeing Times Square after shots were fired by a teen suspect who tried to flee before being taken into custody as the excitement of the Knicks parade started to wind down.

The individual arrested, whom NYPD identified as a 17-year-old male, opened fire around 3:30 p.m. on June 18 at the edge of Times Square, West 44th Street and 7th Avenue. NYPD already in the area due to large crowds of tourists in town, then pursued the teen, who tried to run from the scene. Police said they apprehended the teen along with the weapon allegedly used in the shooting.

In footage recorded by EarthCam, an individual can be seen running into the street and seemingly aim it at the sidewalk. The individual then ran across into the Times Square plaza as police chased him down.

Almost immediately after, a second shooting took place at West 45th Street and 8th Avenue. During the second episode, a 26-year-old male suffered a stab wound to the neck. No arrest was recorded after that incident and the suspect presumably remains at large.

The stabbed individual was attended to by swarms of police officers, who responded to the 8th Ave. scene. EMS rushed the victim is to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition.

The 17-year-old, whose names was not released due to his age, was placed in custody at Midtown South Thursday afternoon and charged with five counts: attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, and unlawful possession of certain ammunition feeding devices.

NYC prohibits firearms in Times Square under the Concealed Carry Improvement Act, which designates the iconic hotspot as a “Gun Free Zone.”
